Thank you so much for this morning's workshop, we ALL really enjoyed it so much - Adults and kids alike! Do thank the crew for us again too!
Bird box carpentry workshop
It motivated me to the importance of doing things. I have learned how to use simple hand tools better like the hand drill and the set square for the importance of a right angle in construction.Today I have been taught how to use a coping saw. I have really enjoyed talking to the volunteer assistant who has listened and guided me. It is good to have a mix of men and women as we can all support and help each other.

It has helped me to feel part of something and be with other people in the community. It is teaching me practical skills and giving me confidence. I can be a bit hasty and the proper use of tools for a better finish is teaching me patience. I feel empowered to have a go now.

I had always wanted to do carpentry ever since I was little but my school did not allow me to do it. My dad was a shipwright and I used to watch him. This course is giving me the confidence in a new found self to have a go and learn. I don't have any of these tools at home and I'm learning which ones I need.

I am learning a lot and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I think this kind of thing would help people to acquire or hone new skills to change their job or perhaps even set up a business when they are ready. 3 days’ later… I went into Exeter to a Men’s Shed shop, to carefully select and purchase tools... The volunteer tutor had explained to me how things worked and what to look for – I wouldn't have known before.

I've just got my CSCS card which is a health and safety requirement which means I can now look for a job on a building site and hopefully get an apprenticeship. When I left school I did an office job but this is really what I want to do. I've learnt more in 6 weeks from Tony (the volunteer tutor) than I've ever learned. My ambition is to buy some land and build my own house - I know it's a dream but...

I look forward to this (workshop) – I like to finish things - it can be a bit boring but it's important to finish. I'm making a tool box which I find therapeutic. Looking at the comb joint on his box... structure is a way of doing it – structure means the way that it is built – that is very important.

I am a cabinet maker by trade and it is my passion. I make and repair furniture and also polish it. I love giving my understanding of the right tools and skill techniques to people new to this work and who want to learn.

I am a retired engineer and have recently moved to this area. I wanted to get involved and to 'give back' my skills to help others.

This workshop is helpful to people who are new to the area like me and who don't know how to belong or to join in. Established arts and crafts groups can be a bit cliquey this place isn't which is why I like it.

We have recently moved to the area and initially when reading the local Journal I was very attracted by the purchase of the old fire station to house the workshop. I have worked in education and what really motivates me is being able to contribute something to the local community and a wide range of people. I really like the community setting and looking ahead I would like to see more younger people being able to participate.

I've only been here for 5 years and this place to me is a godsend – I like getting involved and this is the best way to meet people.

I'm old – no really old, but I still like to learn. It's what keeps me going. I'm also involved with the Men's Shed in Exmouth which has been going now for 8 years.
