Deadline for submissions: 31st March 2022 In Summer 2022, we will be bringing together selected works of Photographers and Writers/Poets in a 2022 Loft Print Publication on the theme of Exploring Nature – in Essence.
Since black & white photography can often be experienced in more subtle and interpretative ways than full colour, this project seeks to challenge both the photographer and the writer - to capture and create in response a pairing of image and writing that is both evocative and original whilst preserving the essence of the subject and the photographer’s perspective. Photographers (of all generations) are invited to submit up to 2 digital images (deadline: 31st March 2022). Your submission(s) must be original and taken by you. They must not use colour. The following formats are accepted: digital black & white, greyscale, or monochrome – black, grey, white, sepia, cyan or brown. Objective: to distill a scene / natural subject down to its core or essence In Summer 2022, an Exhibition Catalogue or Pamphlet will be published bringing together Selected Photographs & Writing by local people (East Devon). Photographers, please email your high-resolution image(s) to [email protected] Deadline: 31st March 2022 Important: Please include the following information with your photograph(s):

Knitted Cowls & Baby BootiesThis month the Beginner’s Knitting Group has been making Cowls and Baby Booties under the expert tuition of Di McKnight. So far the Group has learnt how to Cast On and Off, practiced Garter Stitch, Slip Purl Edging, Purl Stitch, Stocking Stitch, and even shaped a bootie. If you would like to join this class which meets in The Loft every Wednesday 2-4, then contact [email protected] or register via the link on the Beginner’s Knitting page in our online Calendar. Alternatively, call in at the Community Workshop one morning and speak to a Volunteer.
We will be running a series of creative writing classes in the autumn. Each will be designed to spark the imagination using paintings and colour as springboards into the writing.
If you enjoy words – prose or poetry, story-writing, fiction, and would like to experiment with imaginative writing, this might be something for you. For more information, please message Katie McDermott via the Contact us page. In Autumn 2021, we are planning to run a series of classes in Colour-Mixing and Water-colour for Beginners.
If you might be interested in joining this class, please message the Workshop via the Contact us page, so we can get in touch when we have more information. On Friday 21st May 2021 we opened our doors to visitors for the first time as part of a series of Community Engagement Days organised by our Partner, Budleigh Hub Seachange in collaboration with other community service providers.
Over 100 visitors and supporters came along to the old Fire Station, many registering their interest in getting involved in the Charity’s activities - teachers, artisans, crafters, community support workers, representatives of other local charities - collectively offering an array of practical and creative skills to this fledgling Community enterprise. And to give a flavour of the types of activities that will be offered in the Workshop, there were demonstrations of Scroll Saw Work, Wood Turning, Wet Felting, 3D Printing and Tool Sharpening. When we asked visitors what kind of projects they would like to get involved in, the most popular activities were Carpentry, Scroll Saw Work, Textile and Needlecrafts of all kinds, Painting for Beginners and Furniture Restoration. We hope to be able to offer workshops in all these subjects over the coming months with classes starting Wednesday 30th June 2021 (see our Calendar of Events for more up to date information). Thank you to all the volunteers, visitors and hospitality team who gave their whole-hearted support to this inaugural event! An outstanding community fundraising achievement during Lockdown 2020 brings new support and social enterprise opportunities for the area.
Fundraising over the summer 2020 to secure the old fire station in Budleigh Salterton as a permanent legacy for the Community succeeded in raising over £400,000 and enabled the Trust to purchase and transform this iconic public building for community use. After several months of renovation and fitting out by local artisans and a team of volunteers, works are moving forward as planned. We hope to open in Spring 2021. Our architects Dillons Design Limited have created an artist’s impression of how the building will look inside. The exterior of the building will remain the same, including the iconic red frontage. |
